Homework DUE TO BE SET on 11th May : Please list 5 actions of tannins. [astringent is too general]. Pair each action with a different tannin-rich herb you would prescribe to give that specific action. For instance, it could be one as anti-catarrhal, one haemostatic, one anti-incontinent, one antibacterial and one anti-diarrhoeal. Please give the names of the herbs, the part used, and how the tannins bring about the desired action. Also indications, dosages and contraindications for that herb.

BOTANY (all instructions below are from her handouts)
Flowers:
Use your hand lens and Wild Flower Key to study plants, especially those in flower.
Look at the vegetative and floral features of each plant.
What do you notice about the leaves?
How do the flowers attach to the stem?
Are they male/female/perfect flowers?
Perianth - tepals or sepals and petals?
Carpel - Is the ovary inferior/superior/half-inferior? How would you describe the style and stigma?
Stamens - How many? Are they free or joined to other structures?
Can you write the floral formula and draw a floral diagram?
Can you find a representative of each of the following families?
Rosaceae, Lamiacee, Fabaceae, Asteracee, Apiaceae
- Homework from 10th April class:
Make labelled drawings of plants, in flower, from the following five families: Asteracee, Apiaceae, Fabacee, Lamiacee and Rosacee. Include more detailed half flower diagrams if necessary, and floral formulae/diagrams if you wish. Preferably these would be plants you find growing locally. Use your Wild Flower Key to help with identification if necessary.
Use the prompts on p.2/3 of the Lesson 2 handout, the above questions, the terms outlined in class and the Wild Flower Key to help with your drawing. Include short accompanying written descriptions with any further information e.g. where it is growing, what family it is in.

The homework was in two parts. The first part had to be handed in three weeks after 9th February lesson at the latests so that should have been submitted by
Part One : “ Discuss an herb which aids elimination. Explain the actions, which organs/ body systems are involved and how these can assist in conditions, found for example in the skin, muscular skeletal, and urinary systems respectively. (800 words)”
Deadline: 2nd March 2025
Part Two : “Prepare a 5 minute talk on an herb of your choice which we have covered in Materia Medica 1 so far. 5 minutes is not very long, it just needs to be very top line./ possibly about one aspect or use of the herb”
- Deadline: - 22nd June 2025. Bring your presentation to the class on the 22nd June, I think you have to ask for a projector if indeed you are going to be using one.

We didn't quite finish the last lesson, but we will go over abbreviations for prescription writing and any other relevant Latin terminology in the second year.
